Consequences of Debt

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

The consequences of high levels of debt can be staggering. First, you must deal with the crushing payments. Once debt has risen to a certain level, many people find it hard to make even the minimum payments, let alone pay off their debt.

Second, after you are behind on payments you must cope with the threats and harassments of bill collectors. For most people, this can become a living nightmare.

Third, your credit score can be terribly damaged, making it difficult to obtain credit in the future or a low interest rate on items like home loans, car loans, etc.

There is no denying that you must have good credit in order to make large purchases in life and if you have crushing debt levels you simply will not be able to qualify for many of these things, at least not without a lot of difficulty and additional interest payments. In order to enjoy good credit, you must increase your credit score by paying down your existing debt and demonstrate that you can be relied upon to make payments on time.

For many people this can seem to be a Catch-22 situation. You know you need to improve your credit rating, but because you have bad credit, no one is willing to provide you with that opportunity. The good news is that there are actually many things that you can do to assist you through this situation, but you must be willing to make some sacrifices. You must also be willing to curb your spending habits and live through a period of time where you will pay higher interest rates in order to get you out of your current situation.
